Swimming goggles for kids

Start with the age range on the product page, as it indicates the size of the frame. It is only a guide, though, because children's faces vary in size and shape. Let your child try the goggles on, as they can feel for themselves whether they are comfortable. If the goggles leak or press, the shape is probably not right, and it is worth trying a different model.

Either can work, depending on the child and how they will use it. A swim mask is larger and gives a wider field of view, and some children find it more comfortable and reassuring while they are getting used to the water. Once your child starts swimming longer distances, for example in school swim lessons or at swim practice, smaller, lighter swim goggles often work better, because they interfere less with their stroke. Whether your child uses a mask or goggles, make sure no hair is caught under the seal.

In school swim lessons and at swim practice children swim longer distances and need to be able to put on and adjust their goggles themselves. Choose goggles that sit snugly without pressing, with a strap that is easy to adjust and lenses that give a good view. Practice putting the goggles on and taking them off with your child before they take them to school.

First place the goggles over the eyes without the strap and press lightly. If they stay in place for a moment on their own, the shape is probably right. Then adjust the strap so the goggles sit snugly without pressing. A strap that is too tight can be uncomfortable and leave deep marks, and it will not stop leaks. If the goggles leak even when the strap is properly adjusted, the shape is probably not right. Some kids' goggles have a simple clip on the back of the strap that is designed for small hands.

Common reasons for leaks are goggles that do not fit the face, hair or a swim cap caught under the seal, or a strap that is too loose. First check that the seal rests on the skin all the way around, then adjust the strap. Fogging often gets worse when the anti-fog coating inside the lenses is damaged, and that happens quickly if the inside of the lenses is touched. Teach your child not to touch the inside of the lenses and to rinse the goggles in clean water after swimming. Then let them dry before you put them away.

When your child is past the age range for kids' goggles, or the goggles start to pinch or leave gaps, it is time for a larger pair. Some adult goggles also suit teenagers, and models with a narrower frame often fit a slim face better. The shape of the face matters more than age, so it is best to try them on. See the range on the adult swimming goggles page.
